Gier started his career at Wimbledon, the season they returned to the second tier of English football in 2000/01, following their relegation from the Premiership.
The right-back played 71 appearances for Wimbledon, and was released at the end of the 2003/04 campaign when the club was rebranded into MK Dons.
His next move was to Rushden & Diamonds in League Two, where he stayed for two seasons making 67 League appearances scoring twice. However, Rob was apart of the side that finished 22nd in League Two and were relegated into the Conference.
The right-back moved to Cambridge United on non-contract terms and made his debut on 1st September 2006 at home to Exeter City, losing 3-1. He made 17 appearances in the Conference for Cambridge United before making a move to Woking for the rest of the 2006/07 season making a further seven Conference appearances.
At the start of the 2007/08 season, Gier had trials at Welling United playing in friendlies against Folkestone Invicta and Charlton, and at Bristol Rovers in League One.
Gier eventually joined Gary Waddock’s Aldershot Town alongside former-Blue, Ben Harding along with three others. The Shots finished top of the Blue Square Premier, with a record points total. However, Rob was released at the end of the 2007/08 season, making a total of 45 appearances in all competitions.
On 22nd May 2008, Gier signed a one-year deal with Grays Ath, alongside Mark Molesley and Charlie Ide joining from Brentford.
