Born in Isleworth, Middlesex, Chris retired from football in December 2006 at only 30-years-old. Admitting lower league football is not what he wanted.
"A few years ago, I dropped from QPR to Barnet and it was a bit of an eye-opener with regards to salary.ā€¯ Chris said.
The 6 foot 2, center-back followed an interest in financial services, deciding to gain qualifications in the industry before he hung up his boots.
"I had a look at it then and it interested me, so I started to get some qualifications under my belt, which I continued to do whilst at Peterborough.
"People ask me 'Why are you packing it in at 30?' but after a couple of loan spells in the Conference, I didn't really want to continue that trend.ā€¯
Plummer started his career at QPR, where he spent 10 seasons and played 62 league games, scoring just 2 goals for the Rā€™s. At 19-years-old, his professional debut came in May 1996, against Nottingham Forest in the Premiership. The center-back earned 5 England Under-21 caps.
Whilst at QPR, Chris suffered a number of setbacks, firstly a broken leg that kept him out for almost a season. Two games into his return another setback occurred, this time it was a broken ankle which kept him out for equally as long.
In 2002/03, he was loaned out to Bristol Rovers where Plums made 4 appearances. Ian Holloway decided not to renew his contract at Loftus Road and so he moved across London, and dropped down into the Conference with Barnet.
A last minute approach from Swansea caused Chris to delay signing with The Bees until he had spoke to Swans boss Brian Flynn.
Martin Allen, then manager of Barnet, told their official website "I agreed a contract with Plummer before I went away and we agreed that he would come to Underhill on Monday to sign. However, at 5.30 p.m. I received a phone call from him telling me that Swansea were interested in signing him.ā€¯
Spending little over a season at Underhill, Peterborough United came in with a Ā£30,000 bid for the experienced center-back. The Posh, now being managed by former Barnet gaffer Martin Allen, had to beat off competition from Brentford for Plummerā€™s signature.
Unfortunately in the 05/06 season, Chris was diagnosed with testicular cancer, even after his diagnosis he was willing to turn out, when the club was short of fit players. Thankfully he overcame the illness, ready to begin the 06/07 season.
Grays Athletic signed Plummer on a one-month loan deal in October 2006, he made 3 league appearance, and a single appearance in the FA Cup defeat against Bromley. After completing his loan spell at Grays, he then moved again on a one-month loan to Rushden & Diamonds. On his return to London Road he announced his retirement.
