Urchins too strong Grays could not match the firepower or physicality of big-spending Hornchurch.
The Urchins opened strongly and created some promising early chances, but eventually it was a Martin double-act which saw the home team ahead after 27 minutes.
John Martin sent a free kick into the box and former Crystal Palace man Andrew Martin headed home.
The second Hornchurch goal came from a breakaway effort which caught Grays unawares.
Jon Keeling, who looked like a Hornchurch dangerman throughout the match, set up the goal with a speculative cross finding Vinnie John who powered home.
For Hornchurch it was a derby win which underlies the experience of their squad and willingness to pile on the pressure when it counts.
Grays’ defeat was not the result of any lack of talent or even potential. But with six players in the side aged 20 or under they found themselves under pressure by an Urchins side which is brimming with confidence.
Former Charlton Athletic defensive anchorman Eddie Youds, was Grays’ defensive rock, but he can’t be everywhere and Grays will be hoping that their young squad gets the chance to show off their early season potential.
