Standing started his career with Brighton & Hove Albion, before earing a £50,000 move to Aston Villa's youth academy where he played alongside future England stars Gareth Barry and Darius Vassell.

The midfielder spent four seasons at Villa Park as a trainee without making a senior appearance. Standing became something of a cult figure after his grandmother phoned a radio show to quarrel with John Gregory for not giving him a first-team opportunity.

He then moved to Bradford City in March 2002, staying at Valley Parade for over two-years making 30 League appearances and scoring twice.

Walsall then made an approach for Standing, then manager Paul Merson had worked with the box-to-box midfielder whilst at Villa together and felt he could become a key player in the Saddlers squad. It was announced that he would be named as vice captain for the 2005/06 season with Walsall. In July 2006, he left Walsall to seek first-team football elsewhere after 52 League appearances for the Saddlers

After trials at Colchester and Brentford, Standing joined Chesterfield in late 2006 on a month's contract. He made only one appearance in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Oldham. He then linked up with former Villa boss John Gregory at QPR signing on a non-contract basis, prior to joining AFC Bournemouth short-term.

Whilst at Bournemouth he made a single appearance for the Cherries, before being released after his contract expired at the end of the 2006/07 season.

At the start of the following season, Oxford United boss Jim Smith gave Standing a trial and signed the 26 year-old, before making 3 Blue Square Premier starts and a further 3 appearances coming from the bench.

Standing then joined Grays Ath in November 2007, as he was only on non-contract terms with Oxford he was allowed to switch clubs. However Standing is currently on a "reserve contract" and unable to play first team football until 1st January 2008, due to Blue Square Premier rulings.
