Tommy began his career as a youth at Arsenal. In 1998, he was a part of Arsenal's youth team that won the FA Premier Youth League. He made one Premiership appearance for Arsenal on 29th April 2000 replacing Marc Overmars as a sub in the 86th minute against Everton in the 1-0 away win.
Whilst on the books with Arsenal, he was loaned out twice. Firstly he joined Carlisle United in August 1999 where he made five appearances scoring once. He then joined Bristol City in December making four appearances. In between loans he started for Arsenal in their 2-2 Carling Cup match against Middlesbrough in November. Black was subbed for Jermaine Pennant in the 73rd minute. Boro went on to win via penalties.
Crystal Palace signed Black for £500,000 in July 2000. He went on to play 127 games in the Football League with Palace, scoring 10 goals.
During his seven year stint at Selhurst Park, Black also spent time on loan at a number of clubs. In September 2004, the midfielder joined Sheffield United on a one-month loan deal where he made four appearances in the Championship scoring a single goal.
Priestfield was Tommy's next loan destination in January 2006, where he went on to make 17 appearances for Gillingham, notching five goals.
The following season, 2006-07, Black joined Bradford City on loan in November, where he played four league games and two FA Cup matches. His stay in West Yorkshire was cut short after he cracked a rib a month later whilst playing for the Bantams. His stay was due to be extended.
Palace released Tommy in May 2007. He signed for Southend United in early July, turning down Watford. Black made 45 appearances in all competitions scoring twice for the Shrimpers.
After being released at the end of the 2007-08 season, Black had brief spells at Stevenage Borough and Barnet before joining Grays Ath in March 2009.
