Sam Long was first spotted by Charlton's community coaches at the age of 7. He progressed through the Addicks youth system, into becoming a regular with the reserves.
The 18-year-old spent time on trial with Mark Stimson's Gillingham earlier in the 2008/09 season, featuring in their reserve team on a number of occasions. Long is out of contract at the end of the season and Stimson remains interested. "We’ll probably have a look at him in pre-season" said Stimson.
Sam joined Grays Ath on work experience on 26th March 2009. He made six appearances for Grays towards the end of the 2008/09 season, featuring mainly as a right-back.
During the 2009/10 pre-season, he featured for the Gills in friendlies against Folkestone Invicta, Dartford, Faversham Town, Welling United and Aveley. Sam was not offered a deal with Gillingham, and subsequently joined Grays Ath on 30th July along with Jamie Slabber and Gavin Hoyte.
