Born in Newlyn, Penzanze, the West Country left-back started his career as a trainee at Yeovil Town in 1999. He spent 3 seasons at Yeovil making 95 appearances scoring a single goal.
Anthony then made a £50,000 switch to Stockport County in 2002, where he spent a only one season before making a reportedly £150,000 move to Crewe Alexandra. In his first season at he was plagued by injury and only featured as a back-up. He made 93 appearances for Dario Gradi’s men before being released.
Former club Yeovil Town gave Tonkin a trial in August 2006, he then re-signed with former club Yeovil Town. The Glovers allowed Anthony to go out on loan to Grays Athletic where he made his debut in early March against Weymouth at The New Rec.
Tonkin was offered a permanent contract by Grays at the end of the 2006/07 season, but rejected the offer.
Two weeks before the new season, Anthony signed for Forest Green Rovers, filling the void left by Kevin Nicholson when he joined Torquay United. He also rejected a two-year deal from League Two side Lincoln, opting to stay closer to his West Country roots.
