Rhodes was born in Cambridge in 1982 and joined Newmarket Town in 2002. He was signed by Brentford in 2003 and scored the only goal in the last game of the season which guarenteed the club's League One status. A serious knee injury suffered in January 2005 caused him to be out of football for over a year. In October 2006, Rhodes signed for League Two side Swindon Town, before signing on loan for Grays in March 2007. His debut came in the 1-0 home win against Tamworth, and he went on to make a further 13 appearances, scoring 2 goals before his loan ended, and he returned to Brentford.
