Signed a 2 year contract on 2nd Jan 2007, and made his debut in the 2-0 home defeat by Gravesend & Northfleet the following day. He bagan his career at Braintree Town and moved to Canvey Island in 2003. In early 2005, he fell out with then manager Jeff King and was sent out on loan to Nuneaton Borough. Whilst there, he was spotted by Shrewsbury Town who signed him on a permanent deal in March 2005. Following a loan spell at Kidderminster Harriers early in the 2006/07 season, his contract was cancelled on January 1st 2007, allowing him to join the Blues. Cowan joined his former club Nuneaton Borough on loan for 1 month on 17th March 2007.
