Athletic put end to Sutton’s run

New Years Day saw Sutton on the wrong end of a thrilling five goal battle with Mark Stimson’s Grays at The Rec.

The visitors – previously unbeaten in nine league matches – gained the upper hand initially with a gifted free-kick goal going to Tony Quinton.

Blues pushed for the equaliser and got it when Danny Hayzelden was brought down in the area and Stuart Thurgood’s penalty kick looked like it would burst the netting.

Martin Carthy threatened for Blues, but at the other end of the Rec, Blues were kept in the game by Mel Capleton who – reclaiming his place in front of the blues goal – produced a spectacular save.

Goal maker Leroy Griffith laid on a goal for Ellis Remy, who saw his attempt pushed to safety by Andy Iga.

The corner saw Eddie Youds meet the kick with his head and nod Blues into the lead.

Ten minutes into the second half the score was level again thanks to Eddie Akuamoah.

Both sides had second half chances but the decisive blow came with less than ten minutes left.

Playmaking defender Steve Robinson passed to Lee Williams who cut in and scored.

The result delighted most of the 400-plus Rec faithful.
