Disappointing night in cup Mark Stimson’s Grays had their chances but failed to take them against Ryman Division One North high fliers Dunstable in the Bryco Cup fourth round on Tuesday.
Premier division Blues’ Bryco Cup ambitions ended in disappointment for the visitors who fielded a full-strength team – including new QPR signing Wes Daly – but failed to capitalise and were eventually scuppered by a goal from grant Carney.
Grays had travelled to Creasey Park full of hope, but their lower league opposition were determined to give the borough’s boys a bloody nose.
Dunstable chased every ball, and battled to the final whistle.
And although Freddy Eastwood and Martin Carthy came close, the usually razor-sharp Blues attack was blunted by a determined and entrenched home defence.
Stimson – whose mind must now turn to Grays’ league clash with Canvey and the forthcoming rescheduled Old Firm match between Blues and local rivals Thurrock – was philosophical about the Bryco expulsion.
He said: “We had our opportunities – but it was their big game of the season. We don’t like losing any games”.
Thanks to the Thurrock Gazette for the match report
