Barnes made his debut for the senior team in the Essex Senior Cup match on the 16th January 2007, against Braintree Town. He marked the occasion by scoring the only goal of the game.
The young striker also came on as a substitute in the FA Trophy semi-final second leg defeat on 27th March 2007, against Stevenage.
He also had a trial for League Two side Peterborough United in 2007.
Ashley is a product of the Grays Athletic youth system, signing a full-time pro contract on 24th May 2007. He was Grays Athletic's Under-18 Manager's Player of The Year for season 2006/07.
