Grays are riding high Mark Stimson has big Ryman Premier ambitions. And Blues moved one step closer to their dream of a Ryman Premier top two finish to the season on Tuesday.
Blues whipped lowly St Albans 0-3, allowing Grays into third place – displacing Carshalton. The move sets up ‘Super Stimmo’s’ young side for a tilt at Hendon who are only two points ahead and have played a game more than Blues.
Tuesday’s game was an unhappy one for St Albans who were dreading a repeat of their last Blues encounter which ended in a 9-1 drubbing at The Rec in October.
Blues took time to get into their stride but went ahead just inside 20 minutes thanks to Freddy Eastwood who beat several Saints backs before slotting the ball home.
Ram Marwa left the field with a head injury after a collision, but Blues continued to make progress and his replacement, Dean Bradshaw, scored the second from a Leroy Griffiths’ pass.
The home side struggled to get back into the game in the second half but superior possession from the slick Blues team meant they stayed on top, although keeper Mel Capleton was called upon to keep the enemy at bay several times during a period of pressure from the home team in the second.
With under 10 minutes remaining Eastwood popped up again to make it three for the visitors.
Griffiths was his enabler, passing perfectly to setup Eastwood’s driven goal which could not be reached by Saints keeper George Clark.
